Practicing kindness and appreciation is a way to12the quality of your experience and relationships while you are doing these things.13what your brain may tell you, your ability to be kind and grateful is not

14upon either your circumstances or how you feel. 15simply, kindness and gratitude are available to you whenever you choose to practice them.

During your lifetime many things will happen. You will experience some of them as pleasant and comfortable and others as16and unwanted. You do not have control over the circumstances that life17, but you do have a choice about how you18to them. Reacting to whatever19up with kindness and gratitude is a powerful20, a choice supported by hundreds of scientific research studies and recommended in every enduring wisdom tradition for thousands of years. For months fish that live in dark caves in Mexico go without food. They have gone far longer—thousands of years—without light, evolving to lose their eyes and skin pigments (色素). Now researchers have discovered these strange creatures have another oddity (古怪). They survive their food-scarce environment, and the fish have evolved extreme ways of turning nutrients into energy. These features create symptoms like large blood sugar swings that, in humans, are predictors of type Ⅱdiabetes.But in the fish these changes are adaptations, not a disease. These cave fish lead long and healthy lives.

“Understanding how the fish remain healthy in spite of these symptoms may lead to new approaches for treating diabetes in people,” says Cliff Tabin, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School. He and his colleagues are beginning to get clues about how cave fish survive the symptoms.

In humans and other mammals, one of the first signs of type Ⅱ diabetes risk is poor control of glucose. This happens because cells resist insulin (胰岛素), the hormone that signals cells to take in glucose from the bloodstream. If the problems continue, they progress into full-blown diabetes. The illness kills 3.4 million people worldwide every year, but current treatments often do not work.
