With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world,China is desperately trying to clone (克隆)the animal and save the endangered species(物种).That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark.”

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎),semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct,Dr.Duane Kraemer,a professor in Texas A & M’ s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China,is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week,Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer(核子移植)of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available (cap able of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,”Kraemer believes.“They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science i f it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk,so it is worth the effort,”adds Kraemer, who it one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M,the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been d one,and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark.We’re both trying to save animals that face extinciton.I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn form what they are attempting to do.It’s a research that is very much needed.”

The day I left Colombia for the United States, I was thinking every second about my friends. I hadn't said goodbye to them. I couldn't bear to.

Standing in the airport at the age of 12, it was as if I had a photo of "el combito" (that's what we called ourselves) in my empty hand. A picture of a bunch of noisy kids growing together, not only physically but mentally-experimenting with new things together, watching each others' backs, covering each others' mistakes, talking to one another like family.

I saw myself vanishing(消失) from that picture, and then gone. I felt such a deep sadness that day. Even if I were leaving today, almost five years later, I don't think I could say goodbye.

My "combito" were my friends during 6th and part of 7th grade. We had all our classes together and were always talking and making jokes during class. Maribel, who looked older than the rest of us, was my closest friend. Pilar was short but very aggressive(好斗的)and Angelica was a starter in basketball. Fernanda was the youngest and Paola was the friendly but sad one. Last but not least was me, the sweet but noisy girl.

We came up with thousands of lame names for our group, like "white witches" and "mean freshmen" . But we stuck with "el combito." We used to eat all the junky food we could afford, and we'd always order the combo (套餐), which had six things: soda, French fries, hamburger, hot dog, special salsa, and dessert.

Since we were initially(最初)a group of six girls who fit together like the combo, we started calling ourselves "el combito." Separately, we were six unique girls, but together we formed a magic and rare flavor. In the middle of 6th grade Diana became the seventh girl to

5

join us. Later, guys started joining too-Freddie, a metal fan, and Francisco, the cutest guy at school.

Most of the time, it takes them less than two minutes after I walk into the store to get within a few feet of me. Their faulty radar turns their eyes laser-beam(激光束) red and they fly over to me in no time, pretending to fix the shirts or the trousers on the shelf behind me. The point when it really hits me that they're watching me like a surveillance(监视)camera is when I'm focused on the clothes that I'm about to buy and realize they haven't moved. If I'm looking at things for two minutes and you are still straightening the clothes next to me, there's definitely a problem.

This is when I get angry. This is 2005 and I feel like people still can't get past the color of my skin. Yes, I am young, I am black and I want to buy something from your store. I am not going to steal and I feel angry that anyone would suspect (怀疑) me of doing so.

I don't see myself as a target(目标)for suspicion. I'm quiet and I dress nicely. I usually wear high heels and dressy shirts. I don't like looking like everyone else my age. I believe impression is important and I carry myself maturely(成熟地).

I wouldn't shoplift because my mother taught me better than that. I'm a Christian and I believe that stealing is wrong. Plus, it's a crime and I'd never do anything to spoil my future.

A tropical "Brown Widow" spider, new to the Los Angeles area, has been captured. It was a 4th-grade student from Van Deene Elementary School in Torrance who discovered the spider.

Brian Brown, associate curator of entomology, said this spider has not been found previously in the Los Angeles area. "The Brown Widow probably originated in Africa, but has been introduced into the tropics almost worldwide," he said. According to Brown, one of the many ways the spider could have made it to the Southland was through commercial imports of plants, flowers, food or furniture.

There are about 30 described widow species including Black Widows, Red Widows, and the Brown Widows. A Brown Widow spider can grow to one and a half inches long. It has an orange-to-yellow hourglass design on its underside, as opposed to the familiar red hourglass design on the Black Widow.

"The good news is that Brown Widows are not as aggressive as the Black Widows. The bad news is that they are twice as poisonous," Brown said. "Brown Widows will not attack if they are not bothered or made to feel threatened." He added that a Brown Widow will more than likely "play possum" if confronted by a would-be enemy.

Most spiders in Southern California are unable to puncture human skin and if they do, their venom would not be harmful to humans. There are three known species in Los Angeles that pose a threat to humans-the Black Widow, Violin spider, and now the Brown Widow. If bitten by any one of these spiders, seek medical assistance.

57. How did the spider probably get to Los Angeles?

A. A bird brought it across the ocean.

B. Through the importing of flowers, plants or food from other countries.

C. Brian Brown bought it for the museum.

D. A school child found it in the schoolyard.

58. What do you think the underlined term "play possum" means?

A. To pretend to be dead.

B. To attack and bite.

C. To make a spider web.

D. To make an egg sac.

7

59. Which of the following is true according to the text?

A. The newly-found spider is very aggressive.

B. The newly-found spider is extremely poisonous.

C. Most spiders in Southern California can bite very hard-hard enough to puncture a

person's skin.

D. The Black Widow has an orange-to-yellow hourglass design on its underside.

60. What do you think the main idea of this article is?

A. Be careful with poisonous spiders.

B. The Black Widow is more aggressive than the Brown Widow spider.

C. A new kind of spider was found in the Los Angeles area.

D. School children can find spiders in Los Angeles.
