Preview Questions Work in pairs or groups, and discuss the following questions. 1. What do you think of our college grading system? 2. If you failed in your final exam, how would you feel? And what would you do? 3. What subject do you want to study at college? Why? 4. How do you usually prepare for an exam?BACK

UNIT TWOREADING SELECTION: TEXT AWhat do you think of our college grading system? Tips: Our college grading system is normally based on a 100-point

(score) system. Other typical grading system may be based on a scoring range from A to E in which A stands for “excellent”; B “very good”; C “good”; D “pass” and E “fail”. At some universities, teachers may use other forms of grading. All these grading systems may work well with various universities and colleges. We Chinese students are more accustomed to 100-point system because it goes from early schooling to higher education in this country and it works.

If you failed in your final exam, how would you feel? And what would you do?Tips: Normally in this case, most students would say that if they failed in their exam, they would feel very bad, but they would not give up. That sounds well and courageous. It is only right to say that one cannot always fail if he/she tries again, and intelligently. When you fail, you need to first identify your weaknesses by reviewing your work and then make up for them in your study.

What subject do you want to study in college? Why?Tips: At universities, one cannot simply study one or two subjects. You need to broaden horizon of your interest and get involved in many other subjects by taking different courses. For example, you may say that to be a biologist is the first thing you want to do because you really admire the scientists who can make life out of protein. Yet if you are ignorant of, say, social and psychological features of life, you could not study biology well.

How do you usually prepare for an exam?Tips: Ways of preparing for an exam vary. Normally, one has to review the work one has done. This includes rereading the texts, reviewing the lecture notes, doing some more readings relevant to the subject to be examined, consulting the professors, discussing problems with classmates, etc. Most importantly, while you are doing all these, think critically and try to find different answers to the same question.

The origin of the article

The earliest account of the “barometer” legend we’ve found so far comes from a 1958 Reader’s Digest collection, and the tale is usually identified as being the invention of Dr. Alexander Calandra, who included a first-person account of it in 1961 textbook and published it as an article in Saturday Review in 1968. The various responses mentioned in the legend have also been included in lists of supposedly “real” answers given by physics students when confronted by this same question. Whether a real incident was the basis for Dr. Calandra’s creation of this parable is unknown.
