China –A Nation of Many Ethnic Groups

China is a beautiful land. The ancestors of its various ethnic groups have, since time immemorial(远古的) , labored(劳动) and multiplied(繁殖) on this vast ,bountiful (丰富的)land. Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of Qin dynasty, accomplished the historic mission of founding a centralized ,unified state. This marked a great beginning .Since then, Chinese various ethnic groups have lived together as a single nation.

56 Ethnic Groups of China

Today in China, there are 56 ethnic groups including the Hans. They differ greatly in size. The Hans are the most numerous—more than all the rest put together. They constitute 91.59% of Chinese population according to the 2000 national population census(人口普查). All the rest combine to make up just 8.41%.Of these minority groups, the largest is the Zhuang, with more than 15 million people; next come the Manchu, Hui, Miao, Uygur(维吾尔族),Yi, and Tujia peoples ,each has a population of over five million.

Manchu——Population and Distribution

Today, the Man ethnic minority has a population of over 10 million. The Man people live mainly in Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning Provinces of north China although the Man minority can be found in most of China's largest cities as well.

Manchu——Language

In the 16th century, the written language of the Man people was created from characters based on the Mongolian language, with dots following the distinctive characters. The Man language is part of the Tungus-Manchu group(满-通古斯 语族), a branch of Altaic phylum(阿尔泰语系).

Today ,the Man people learned and adopted the Chinese language of the dominant Han, only elders in remote regions of Heilongjiang Province still “Manchu” in Man language(manju) know and can use their ancestral language.

Manchu——BeliefThe ancient Man people believed in Shamanism (萨满教). Later, with the influence of Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism, their beliefs took on a pluralistic (多元的)quality. It is not uncommon to see statues of Bodhisattva(菩 萨), Guan Yu and other gods positioned in Man houses for blessing.

Manchu——Clothing

The Man people traditionally coiled their hair in high tufts (一绺) on top of their heads and wore earrings, long gowns. The women with higher social standing wore silk clothing while cotton clothing was worn by women of lower social standing. Some costumes (including qi pao and ma gua) are still popular all over China. The man‘s clothing once consisted of a short and adjusted jacket over a long gown with a belt

(腰带)at the waist to facilitate horseriding and hunting. Unlike the Han, the Manchu did not practice foot binding.

The Man people have a distinctive cuisine(烹饪) with typical dishes that include blood sausage(血肠), and 'bobo', a type of steamed cake. In Man culture, eating the meat of dog or any product derived(来源)from dog is shunned(回避).

Girls sucking tobaccoIn the past,the Man people developed agriculture, fishery and animal husbandry for their livelihood, they sucked tobacco to protect themselves from scorpion and snakes. The smell of the tobacco helps driving away the scorpion and snakes.
