ThetopbedattheErdenObowascalledtheUpperNaogangdaiFormationbythegeologistsofNeiMongol(Jiang,1983),whichwasadoptedbyRussellandZhai(1987).Qi(1990)calledthetopbedattheErdenObotheHouldjingFormationandthe“upperredbed”theBaronSogFormation.ItseemsthatQi’snamesareincorrect,becausetheHouldjingFormationisoflateEoceneinage(Wang,1997)andthelithologyofthe“upperredbed”isquitedifferentfromthatoftheBaronSogFormation.TheauthoragreeswithJiang(1983)thatthetopbedoftheErdenOboistheUpperNaogangdaiFormation,butthinksthatitsageisearlyOligoceneratherthanlateOligocene.ThelithologyoftheUpperNaogangdaiFormationontheErdenOboiscomposedofgray,yellowcoarsesand,brownclayandyellowporoussandandgravel,whichissimilartothatofthetopbedontheNomKhongObo.ProbablythetopbedsofboththeErdenOboandNomKhongObobelongtoonesameformation—UpperNaogangdaiFormation.SincetheErdenObolieabout80kmsouthwestfromtheNomKhongObo,furtherfieldworkshouldbedonetotestmysuggestion.Forthemomentbeing,theauthortemporarilycallsthetopbedontheNomKhongObotheUpperNaogangdaiFormation.
