The World Health Organization (WHO) says alcohol abuse is the third leading cause of death in the world. A new WHO report says the harmful use of alcohol kills two and one-half million people a year. And officials say action is needed to tackle the problem. The WHO released the \Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2011\last week. The report shows young people at risk. It says 320,000 people between the ages of 15 and 29

die yearly from alcohol-related causes. That is nine percent of all deaths in that age group.

The WHO report finds that six percent of all male deaths worldwide are related to alcohol. This is true in only one percent of female deaths.

There are four main causes of alcohol-related death. Injury from car accidents or violence is one. Diseases like cancer, heart and blood system diseases are the others. The WHO report says alcohol abuse also adds to the development of 200 other diseases. The WHO has a plan to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. It includes raising taxes on alcohol, reducing the number of places to buy alcohol and raising the drinking age. Officials say other measures include effective drunk driving laws and banning some alcohol advertising.

16.How many people die from alcohol abuse a year?

A) One million and a half. B) Two million.

C) Two and a half million. D) Three and a half million.

A new WHO report says the harmful use of alcohol kills two and one-half million people a year(世界卫生组织的一项新报道称滥用酒精每年导致250万人死亡)。

17.How many people between the ages of 15 and 29 die from alcohol-related causes each year?

A) 30,000. B) 300,000. C) 312,000. D) 320,000.

It says 320,000 people between the ages of 15 and 29 die yearly from alcohol-related causes(每年有320000个15岁到29岁的人死因为酒精所致),所以选D。

18.Which is one of the measures taken by the WHO to reduce the harmful use of alcohol?

A) Imposing reasonable taxes on alcohol. B) Providing special places to sell alcohol. C) Making effective laws on drunk driving. D) Making ads to warn against the use of alcohol.

Officials say other measures include effective drunk driving laws and banning some alcohol advertising(官方称其它(减少酗酒危害的)措施还包括一些有效的相关酒后驾驶的法律和一些对酒水广告的禁令)。 Script

In January, over 600,000 people took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

The results, published this week, show a promising increase in garden bird populations since last year.

Over 10.2 million birds were counted. The annual survey, now in its 32nd year, was held on 29 January.

The survey asked people to take to their gardens and public open spaces to count the number of birds during a given hour.

The hard winter conditions of 2009-10 caused significant drops in the number of small birds recorded in last year's Big Garden Birdwatch.

\disaster last year,\many may have had a decent breeding season and have been able to bounce back a little.\But Sarah Kelly warns that people must be alert: \back down, so it's important that everyone continues to feed their garden birds.\ Many other previously declining populations, such as the blackbird, also appear to be doing better, compared to last year.

19.What do the results of the Big Garden Birdwatch this year show?

A) There is an encouraging rise in garden bird populations. B) There are more people taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch. C) There is a significant drop in the number of small birds. D) There is no change in garden bird populations.

The results, published this week, show a promising increase in garden bird populations since last year(本周“大花园观鸟”中鸟类数量公布,今年较之去年有显著增长)。

20.When was the annual survey of the garden bird populations held?

A) On 20 January. B) On 29 January. C) 30 years ago. D) 32 years ago.

The annual survey, now in its 32nd year, was held on 29 January(每年的调查在1月29日进行,现在已经是它第32个年头了)。

21.Why was there a significant drop in the number of small birds in 2010 compared with the records in 2009?

A) Because they suffered a harsh winter. B) Because they did not have enough food. C) Because they missed the breeding season. D) Because some of them were killed by hunters.

The hard winter conditions of 2009-10 caused significant drops in the number of small birds recorded in last year's Big Garden Birdwatch(2009至2010年冬天恶劣的气候条件导致去年“大花园观鸟”中小鸟的数量大量减少)。 Script

Food prices are at their highest level since the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization began keeping records in 1990. The causes include bad weather and growing demand. Some experts also blame the use of food crops to make fuel. But higher food prices are not always the result of limited supplies.
