A. Knowledge Aims
1). Learn to know different birthday traditions around the world.
2). Learn to respect others’ traditions;
3). Learn guess the meaning of words.
B.Ability Aims
(1). Know more about other countries’ birthday traditions;
(2).Learn the skills of reading: skimming, scanning and
close-reading.
(3). Learn to make a survey. You can get your information from the Internet or from other aspects.
C. Moral Aims
Everyone has a birthday. They should learn to know more traditions about it, and try to respect them. They can learn the
differences among different countries. They will be more interested in English.
Ⅱ.The Important Points and Teaching strategies
1. Students can understand text by using different skills of reading class.
2. Students can know different birthday traditions around the world. Teaching strategies: role play and work in pairs.
Ⅲ.The Difficult Points and Teaching strategies
1. Teach the students to guess the meaning of new words by some sentences and pictures.
2. Encourage students speak English bravely.

Everyone has a birthday. And they like that day’s coming, because they can get what they want and do what they want to do. They also have interests in the topic, so it can draw their attention. They have their own experiences and so they can share it with us. Ⅵ. Teaching Processes:
Step one: Pre-reading
1. Interview:
A: When is your birthday?
B: My birthday is on…
A: What do you usually do on your birthday?
B: I usually …
Step two: While-reading
1. Skimming(略读)
Read the passage quickly and answer the following question:
1). How many different birthday traditions does the writer mentioned?
2). What birthday traditions can be found almost anywhere and anytime?
Reading Strategy: We can find out the topic sentences to get the main idea.
2. Careful-reading (精读) 1). In China, on child’s first birthday, family members put many things around the child.
2). The priests usually organized a party at children’s special birthday in Japan.
B. Read paragraph 3~5 and answer the following questions.
1). What do the Latin American girls do after a special ceremony?
2). When do you have the right to vote or join the army?
3). Why do the twenty-first birthday cake in the shape of a key? Step three After-reading
1. Group work
Read and fill in the chart according to the text.

What is your father or mother’s birthday? What special things do you usually do at your family? Discuss with your group members and then give a report.

1. Take notes of this class.
